Race Report, matt Williams, Huskisson Tri |
|
On the 12th of March I competed in the Huskisson sprint distance triathlon, sprint distance consists of a 750metre swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.
The conditions were perfect with no wind and clouds about. I started well on the swim and quickly established myself in the lead swim pack after the first buoy I was in 2nd and quite content to just sit on his feet and conserve energy for the bike. I exited the swim in 2nd and ran up the stairs from the beach into transitions.
Onto the bike, I settled into a solid pace I was now leading, during the week I picked up set of brand new fast forwards, 5 spoke front, disc rear they felt unbelievable on the flat, by the turn around I had a big lead and was feeling great. The bike course was undulating and was quite tough I entered transitions about to start the run.
Onto the run I started well holding a good pace but quickly hit the wall about halfway and struggled due to the solid bike that I had but not too bad considering. I finished the race in 1hour and 30seconds giving me 1st in my age group and 1st overall. Also had fastest bike split in 27min 59secs faster than anyone else by more than 1min 30secs.
Thanks to Frank and Tim and everyone else at bikebug and frf for the support.

Luke Williams Race Report from Cronulla |
Cronulla Criterium Report
Sunday 12 December 2010 was the final days racing of the NSW Cycling Grand Prix Series at Cronulla. I was only eligible to ride the Cronulla stage in the Under 17 men’s category.
On the morning of the race I rode from my house to the race which is 10km’s, I used this time to spin the legs out and see how I was feeling. I watched the Masters races and rode the course to familiarise myself with it, I followed my normal warm up routine and caught up with a few buddies.
The race rolled out at 10.00am, the distance was 10 laps of the circuit, and I was quietly confident. There was a large field of about 40 riders, I used the first 2 laps to settle in, on lap 3 I was feeling really good and was controlling the pace at the front, and a few attacks were launched, I didn’t work with the other riders to chase the attacks as I wanted to conserve my energy.
At lap 4 a strong attack was launched and the field worked really hard to chase it down, as the attack was shut down I made an immediate counter attack, the bunch hesitated to chase opening up a large gap, I was feeling strong, but didn’t want to give too much away too soon, with 4 laps to go I was still holding a decent gap, and I realised that I had a chance of holding them off. The U turn gave me a chance to gauge just how far back the field was behind, with 2 laps to go Brad Heffernan from Illawarra bridged the gap from the main group to me, and then there were 2!
At this stage we weren’t thinking about tactics, we were just trying to maintain the lead, the bell lap came, and we were still away. Brad put in an early effort, and I responded, with half a lap to go he was leading out, at 400mts he started his sprint, my plan was to come around him with 150mts to go, my plan worked, I went over the line in first place and claimed the win. |
